Balancing the Budget

The projected budget deficits for the city must be addressed immediately and thoughtfully. We must balance the budget while protecting our priorities.

  • Cut or suspend unnecessary spending
  • Make existing expenditures deliver greater economic returns
  • Protect our priorities

CUTTING SPENDING

There are several areas that can save the city millions of dollars: postponing spending on a proposed Biltmore Ave. parking garage, returning Civic Center monies back to the general fund, postponing $1.6 million dollars in new vehicle purchases, and making the municipal golf course revenue neutral.

DELIVER GREATER RETURNS

Taking $75,000 from the Public Art Board and putting it towards a downtown Artists' Resource Center is a way to stimulate the economy while supporting the arts.

PROTECT OUR PRIORITIES

We must not cut a penny from affordable housing, public safety, homelessness initiatives, or transit services. These are the elements that will help Asheville weather this recession and make our city more resilient for recessions to come.
