Basic Information About Warehouse Management Systems

by Traci Richardson

Running a warehouse of any kind can become very difficult if there is a lot of stock moving in and out constantly. The use of warehouse management systems can make this task far more manageable.

The most basic warehouse management system, also known as a WMS, was initially used for controlling the movements of materials and products in and out of warehouses but had only simple storage location functionality. A WMS is basically a software application that manages daily tasks relating to the movement of stock. Newer versions of this type of software have become increasingly complex, sometimes necessitating dedicated staff to run the system.

With a WMS it is possible to track the location of stock items and inventory levels. The main purpose of such a system is to provide information which is essential in controlling and monitoring the movement of stock and supplies.

The choice of WMS will reflect the requirements of the specific operations of the specific company. The complexity of the system will vary with each business depending on the needs of that business.

The benefits of making use of a WMS include a decrease in inventory and labour costs. Storage capacity and inventory accuracy should also improve. The overall improved running of tasks should also help to improve customer service. Since the success of a business that supplies any kind of product relies on products being sent on time and arriving safely at the customers location, having the right WMS will help to ensure that operations run smoothly and efficiently.

A good WMS should have a flexible location system. Other features that are worth looking for in a WMS include integration with radio frequency and bar coding technologies as well as real-time updates for inventory. The use of a hand held interface and built in integration with data collection devices are also important.
