Community Sustainability

  • Protect the integrity of our neighborhoods.
  • Ensure that West Asheville remains connected to downtown
  • Keep our Fire, Police, and Emergency services strong.
  • More sidewalks, more bike lanes.
  • Reduce battles over development
  • End chronic homelessness

PROTECT NEIGHBORHOOD INTEGRITY

Every neighborhood in Asheville is as important as every other. Just as Burton Street neighborhood ought to be protected, so should Haw Creek, Kenilworth, West Asheville, Beaverdam, and the rest. We can do this by refusing to accept an I-26 alternative that impacts Burton St. neighborhood and which minimizes impact on Hillcrest and Montford. We can do this by ensuring that new developments are concentrated on existing transportation corridors. We can do this by ensuring that new multi-family developments in existing neighborhoods meet special requirements.

KEEP FIRE, POLICE, AND EMERGENCY SERVICES STRONG

Our public servants are an amazing group of dedicated people. Already underpaid, they are threatened with freezes or cuts in light of budget shortfalls. It's taken Asheville years to address problems with police recruitment and retention. This is no time to abandon those gains.

MORE SIDEWALKS, MORE BIKE LANES

Strong communities are made up of neighbors who have relationships with each other. More sidewalks and bike lanes, in addition to the environmental and health benefits, improve community resilience.

DEVELOPMENT BATTLES

Every six months there's a new development project that polarizes this community. By making our development ordinances more clearly and uniformly applied and enforced, we can do away with a lot of the battles that tear this community apart.
