Laughter As A Tool For Healing

by Victor Hood

Did you realize that laughter can heal?

The experience of laughing has been proven to be an extremely potent tool for self healing. Without a doubt you have heard of "The Secret" (Rhonda Byrne's million-selling DVD, of course) and this is one of the more memorable anecdotes from the film. There was this woman who literally laughed her way to a cure for her breast cancer. All she did was amuse herself through funny programs, and stay away from stress. And all it took was three months for the cancer to vanish from existence.

Is this really possible? Is there really a way for a sick person to laugh his or her way to good health?

There have been several medical studies done, in fact, that show proof positive that laughter can actually release a few key chemicals that serve as our body's own natural source of self-repair - now isn't that something to laugh about, and not laugh at?

Unfortunately, a lot of us do the opposite and take things way too seriously for our own good - we let stress to get the better of us, thus blocking the flow of these beneficent chemicals and allowing our muscles to tense up, our digestive systems to malfunction and our bodies to suffer. As your body has to try that much harder to regulate your normal functions it takes its toil and aging can occur.

Even the most tragic events in life have a comic element, let's face it, and by seeing the world with rose-tinted glasses, you are ensuring good health and a glowing personality. Using humor is not just great for your physical health; it can also keep you healthy emotionally and mentally. So it is indeed safe to say that you would need to seriously change the way you look at things, no pun intended, to add some humor to your life.

If you constantly dwell on feelings of negativity you are not allowing yourself to see the humorous side of life and are robbing your body of much needed chemicals and a state of relaxation.

If you think your life is in dire need of some humor, these ideas can help put it to the best effect possible:

Do things that make you laugh, things you enjoy doing.

Watch comedies that make you laugh.

Read joke books or funny magazines.

Repeat the jokes you like to friends and family. Their laughter will have you laughing again.

Don't be embarrassed to tell other people about YOUR "bloopers" and funny stories.

If you know somebody who is funny, hang out with him/her more often!

Ask friends and family to tell you about their funny experiences.

Belly laughter at least once a day - really, does it work? You could find yourself laughing your way to the Fountain of Youth!
