Pre-Columbus American History

by Charlott Cratic

There are many stories claiming that Columbus did not even set his foot in America, let alone discover it. Columbus is believed to have discovered America in 1492 passing through North America.

The history of Indian Americans dates back in 1902. They are of diverse backgrounds with stratified social classes from lowly educated to highly educated, rich and the poor.

The great Indian Americans to inhabit America were Sikhs who are sometimes referred to as Punjab. They traveled from India, leaving their families in search for jobs in America.

The number of Indians traveling to America has been increasing dramatically over the last century, with a mere 200 making the journey in 1902 to more than 2.15 million in recent years.

The economic circumstances of Indian Americans have become vastly diverse, with many from this group serving as business owners and organizational leaders of enterprises of all types.

In his 2005 book New Revelations of the America Before Columbus, Charles Mann asserts that Indian Americans represented a sizable presence in the western hemisphere prior to the arrival of Columbus, and were characterized by a significant degree of cultural and educational achievement.

While their history may often be overlooked, the origins of Indian Americans are very diverse. This group hailed from locations such as Kenya, Tanzania, Fiji, Uganda, Jamaica, Canada, the United Kingdom, Guyana and Malaysia, which are all regions in which their populations remain on the rise.

Today, the United States has one of the largest populations of Indians outside of India and it is a group that has a lasting impact on America and American history. Deeply religious and varied in background, they have long been a part of the American story.

On the subject of Columbus discovering America some people believe that he didn't and a man called Amerigo Vespucci, who was born on April 9, 1453. He was an Italian by birth and later studied the world maps deeply to become an explorer.

There are plenty of legends about the discovery of America, but little in the way of detailed history - what we do know is that the United States is, compared to most nations of the world, still very young but it has one of the most fascinating stories ever told.
