by Sharlene Joyner

As a political leader for the new democrats, Ray Martin has been in the public arena since 1982. At this time, He was given a public vote of confidence to hold a seat and work with the legislative assembly of Alberta. By being the first politician to give a true name to the new democrats he has helped grow the NDP to a state of national recognition. This experience worker was born in 1942 and found himself in the public eye consistently in 1982 which is 40 years in the future.

One of the great public achievements of Ray Martin is when he led the new democrats otherwise known as the NDP to a huge increase the amount of seats they previously had in the 1986 provincial elections campaign. A Masters student, University of Calgary graduate and a participant in the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, it's not a surprise that this experienced politician has ended up in public arena.

Recently branded from a new campaign where he ran for a seat in the area of Edmonton east for the NDP, he had to face off against his political nemesis Peter Goldring which he has faced 4 previous times and lost each one. The main concern that he brings to the table is the health care system.

Because of his position, he has noticed that their is growing insecurity in the nation that warrants further attention

Being defeated has not stopped Ray Martin, but it has caused him to rethink his position on a few stances to gain favor in the public eye. That mixed with his experience in the Alberta Legislative assembly, things might be on the cusp of a change.

He has been defeated many times but his perseverance proves that he thinks he has something to offer. Whether it's that his agenda and popularity goes missing to the masses or they are uncertain whether they can trust him, one thing is for sure. Ray Martin is not giving up.
