Shooting for Six Hours

by Alexis Wright

Until recently, I always thought when I heard people say they needed eight hours of sleep that they were just kidding. I didn't think people actually got that on a regular basis.

Thankfully, I don't require that much sleep. In fact, I usually go to bed about six hours before I wake up, and I don't usually sleep the whole time, which means I average well under six hours of sleep a night, and I feel fine (once I get my coffee). So why would anyone need a whole eight hours?

I realize we're all different, and that includes the structure of our bodies but never quite grasped that concept. It's pretty common for me to be the last person in the house to go to bed and the first to wake up. As a matter fact, just the other day I was making a pot of coffee when my roommate woke up and was amazed I was up already despite going to be as late as I did.

I'm night owl but since I work in the morning, I'm also forced to be a morning person.

Since I never actually realized there are people who require more than six hours of sleep a night, I also never stopped to consider how unusual my situation is. Perhaps I should consider it a gift.

This gift allows me to be productive at night and get things done in the morning (assuming I get my coffee in the morning.) I've said before that I use coffee as a substitute for sleep. The way I look at is if a cup of coffee helps me get things done without needing an extra two or three hours of sleep, it's definitely worth it.

However, if there's one downside, it's the fact I don't enjoy one of my favorite childhood pastimes as much as I used to: camping.

Recently, I went on a camping trip with some friends who went to bed at 10 p.m. and even though it was dark, I was still wide awake and nowhere near ready for bed. I had to find ways to keep myself entertained.

That's the only negative I can think of off the top of my head. I love watching a movie or sporting even that ends after 1 a.m. and still being able to start work at 8 a.m.
