Sun Peaks News Serves Major Resort Complex As Well As Entire Kamloops Area

by Marsha Silva

The Sun Peaks News is a newspaper serving the Kamloops and surrounding area of British Columbia. It is said to be, not only the first, but the only independently-published newspaper in the area. Sun Peaks is a huge ski resort that anchors the area, with an extensive array of year-round activities, recreation, and services. The newspaper (also called SPIN Magazine), is based out of the resort, and is delivered to residents and businesses throughout Kamloops and the North & South Thompson Valleys the fourth Friday of every month. The news magazine can also be picked up at over thirty-five area lodges, restaurants, and places of business.

The unique newspaper provides the community, resort visitors, individuals, and businesses with news, advice, events, and activities, and, of course, advertising.

The resort area welcomes 350,000 visitors annually, year-round; it is the second largest four-season resort in B. C., and is the fastest developing year-round resort in the B. C. Interior. Sun Peaks residents and visitors, business and building people use Kamloops for their shopping. Most of these people have a high level of disposable income. The paper, with its monthly distribution, has a long shelf-life, and competitors can't just jump in when they see a competitors ad.

Some of the reasons businesspeople advertise in the news vehicle is that it is the only resort-based publication featuring news, real estate, athletic and recreational pursuits, food-related subjects, and events in the local communities, a wise business choice for successful target marketing.

The year-round resort boasts a pedestrian village with cobblestone streets, and more than twenty restaurants and cafes, as well as retail shops. Local farmers, ranchers and artisans hold the Sun Peaks and Region Farmers Market in the central village every Sunday from June to September.

Summer activities at the resort include biking, walking, tennis, swimming, sports, and general relaxing and recreation. Visitors can ride a chairlift to fifteen hiking trails, or visit a nearby lake to canoe, kayak, swim or paddle-board.

Some of the selling points for advertising in the Sun Peaks News include the fact that the area boasts 350,000 annual visitors, It is the second largest four-season resort in B. C., and also the fastest developing year-round vacation complex in the B. C. Interior. The newspaper points out that residents and visitors alike shop in Kamloops. The paper further notes that almost all the service needs at Sun Peaks, including builders and trades use Kamloops as their source for products and equipment. The newspaper also highlights the fact that most of the area's visitors and citizens have a high level of discretionary income, and make a good audience for advertising. Finally, the paper is distributed the fourth Friday of every month, has a lengthy shelf-life, and points out that competitors can't jump in right away with their own competing ad.
