The Importance Of Temporary Floor Protection

by Shelly Clayton

Home renovations can result in unexpected damage to carpets, rugs, and hardwood floors, but those dangers are eliminated by homeowners who use temporary floor protection. The good news is that there are several different type of protective coverings that homeowners can use to catch paint, dust, and other debris.

Cardboard is among the most popular of choices, primarily due to its low cost. All that is needed is the type of heavy, corrugated cardboard that is used in the manufacture of many boxes. Simply flatten those boxes down and spread them out edge-to-edge so that they cover the whole flooring surface. For the best results, tape them together so that they don't separate.

Of course, cardboard is not always the best option when paint and drywall is involved in the renovation. These particles can slip past the cardboard sheet and stain floors and carpets. For these renovation jobs, a thick plastic sheet is a superior alternative, since it will completely trap the dust and paint on the plastic surface.

There are also jobs for which these protective measures can serve another purpose. When baseboards and low-lying areas of a wall need to be renovated, foam sheets can be obtained that will enable the contractor to work on his knees without discomfort. These foams can also help to protect floors from falling objects.

There are also heavy duty materials available for covering floors during lengthy construction projects. These materials are usually far more expensive than the lightweight choices, but will completely protect any flooring surface from any type of stain or damage.

Of course, it is up to each homeowner to determine his preferred option, based upon the work that is being done and the cost he is willing and able to bear. As long as the homeowner understands the importance of temporary floor protection, he can ensure that his floors remain free from accidental damage during renovations.
