What You Should Know About Food Packaging Labels

by Lillian Powell

When looking at food packaging labels it is important to know what you are looking for. You need to know if what you are eating is suitable for your diet. Sometimes this is harder than it first appears.

The first thing to be aware of is a lighter options does not necessarily mean it is lower in fat. What it means it will be lower in fat compared to an equivalent product. You should still check to see the content. For example a product may say on the label that it is 90 per cent fat free. This still means that 10 per cent of the product will still be fat content. You need to check how much that is in grams to see if this exceeds your recommended daily allowance. This will vary if you are a man or a woman and your size.

There are also the vitamins and minerals that are essential to the body. Ideally these nutrients should come from natural sources and as few processed foods as possible. This means it is less likely that there will be a higher sugar or fat content, as well as any unnatural preservatives.

You should also know that just because you see a picture of a food on the cover that does not necessarily mean that they are the predominant ingredient. Fruit juices are a good example of this. You should look for 100 per cent juice on the label in order to make sure that you are getting the juice you want without any unnecessary additions.

It is also important to make sure that you are getting the recommended daily allowance of certain nutrients. You should look to get these nutrients from natural sources rather than artificial food or drink that may have a lot of sugar in them. You should also check that the figures are relevant to you. For example a 30g serving is more for some people than it is for others.

The best way of looking at food packaging labels is to know what is right for your body. In order to stay healthy it is best to consult with your doctor to see what nutritional requirements are right for you. With a sensible approach you can ensure that you get the most from your diet.
